This is the notice required by section 18 of the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA). It covers techsight.co.za, including the Insights section, and the enquiries you send us. It replaces the earlier notice that covered only the TechSight Data Feeds subscription.

1. Who is responsible

Tech Sight (Pty) Ltd is the responsible party. Frans Vermaak is the designated Information Officer and can be reached at info@techsight.co.za. Write to that address for anything in this notice, including a request to see, correct or delete what we hold.

This notice covers personal information only. Our terms of use govern the use of the website and its content.

2. What the website collects

The site has no analytics, no advertising tags and no tracking pixels. There is no contact form. Nothing on a page reports your visit to a third party, and the fonts and images are served from our own domain rather than from someone else's.

Two things do happen when you visit:

• Server logs. Our hosting provider records the standard web-server log for each request: the IP address, the time, the page requested, the referring page if your browser sends one, and the browser identification string. These logs exist so the site can be kept running and abuse investigated. We do not use them to build a profile of you and we do not combine them with anything else.
• One browser storage item. If you switch the site between light and dark, your choice is saved on your own device under the key ts-theme. It holds the word light or dark, nothing else. It never reaches us. Clearing your browser data removes it.

3. What you send us

If you email us, we hold that email: your address, your name if you give it, and whatever you choose to put in the message. We use it to answer you and to carry out any work that follows. We process it because you asked us to, and, once there is an engagement, because the contract requires it.

We do not send marketing email and we keep no mailing list. The daily AI Brief and the articles are published on this website. There is nothing to subscribe to and nothing to unsubscribe from.

4. Who else sees it

Only the operators that let us run the business:

• Our hosting provider, which stores the website and its logs.
• Our email provider, which carries and stores the messages you send us.
• Polar, our former Merchant of Record for the TechSight Data Feeds subscriptions. Those plans are withdrawn and no new data reaches Polar, but records of past purchases remain with it as its own records require.

Each processes personal information on our behalf under section 21 of POPIA, and each is bound to confidentiality and to security measures. We do not sell personal information and we do not give it to anyone for their own marketing.

Some of these operators are outside South Africa. In those cases the transfer is made under the safeguards in section 72 of POPIA, which include an agreement or binding rules giving protection substantially similar to the Act.

5. How long we keep it

• Correspondence and engagement records: for the duration of the engagement, then for the periods South African law requires us to keep company and tax records, which are seven years under section 24 of the Companies Act 71 of 2008 and section 29 of the Tax Administration Act 28 of 2011.
• Server logs: only for as long as security monitoring and abuse investigation need them, under our hosting provider's deletion cycle. We are confirming that period with the provider and will state it here once we have it in writing.
• Anything else: only for as long as the purpose it was collected for still exists, as section 14 of POPIA requires.

6. Security

We apply the measures section 19 of POPIA requires: access to systems is restricted to the people who need it, traffic to this site is encrypted in transit, and access is reviewed. No system is beyond compromise, so if a breach affects your personal information we will notify you and the Information Regulator as section 22 requires.

7. Your rights

Under POPIA you may ask us to confirm what we hold about you and to give you a copy, correct or delete what is inaccurate, irrelevant, excessive, out of date or unlawfully obtained, and object to processing on reasonable grounds. Ask at info@techsight.co.za. We answer within a reasonable time, and within any period the Act sets for a formal request.

8. Children

The site is aimed at organisations and the people who work in them. We do not knowingly collect the personal information of a child. If you believe we have, tell us and we will delete it.

9. Changes

We date this notice at the top. When it changes materially we change that date and publish the new version here.
